Hiking Trails of Mount Athos - Walking Between the Monasteries

Approximate distances and walking times along the ancient footpaths connecting the twenty monasteries of the Holy Mountain

For centuries, pilgrims and monks have travelled across Mount Athos on foot, following ancient footpaths—many of them cobblestone kalderimia dating back to the Byzantine era—that connect the monasteries, sketes and cells scattered across the peninsula. Today, these same trails offer visitors a unique way to experience the Holy Mountain beyond the ferry routes and modern roads, walking through chestnut forests, along dramatic coastlines and past centuries-old chapels.

Below you will find approximate distances and walking times for the main routes connecting the monasteries, based on official trail data. Please note that conditions can change due to weather, season and ongoing maintenance work, so pilgrims planning to hike are strongly advised to consult an updated map and confirm current path conditions before setting out.
