Who Can Visit Mount Athos?

The Rule of Avaton (Entry Restrictions)

• Entry is permitted only to adult males, regardless of nationality or religious beliefs. Boys under the age of 18 may also visit, provided they are accompanied by their father, legal guardian, or an authorised adult group leader carrying written parental consent where required.

• In accordance with the centuries-old monastic tradition and the constitutional status of Mount Athos, women are not permitted to enter the Holy Mountain. This rule remains strictly enforced.

Best Time to Visit Mount Athos

The best periods to visit Mount Athos are from 15 March to 15 June and from 1 September to 30 November. During these months, pilgrims enjoy pleasant weather, comfortable walking conditions and a peaceful atmosphere throughout the Holy Mountain.

Step 1: Apply for Your Diamonitirion (Entry Permit)

📌 Good to Know

All pilgrims wishing to visit Mount Athos must obtain a written visitation permit called Diamonitirion from the Pilgrims’ Office. This strictly personal permit allows you to visit and stay in the monasteries of your choice and is valid for 4 calendar days (3 overnights).

Daily Permit Limits & Booking in Advance

The Pilgrims’ Office issues a limited number of permits daily:

⚠️ Very Important: Due to these limitations, you must make a reservation at least 2–3 months in advance.

Since January 2025, the Holy Community has also introduced additional accommodation restrictions to preserve monastic life: a maximum of 200 pilgrims/month in communal sketes, 50/month in other sketes’ central churches, and 20/month in kellia, with groups generally limited to 5 persons (exceptions apply for students and military personnel).

Step 2: Arrange your Hospitality in Holy Monasteries and Sketes

Once you receive your permit confirmation, you must contact the Holy Monasteries or Sketes you wish to visit directly to arrange your overnight stays. The Holy Monasteries do not charge for their hospitality, although voluntary donations are warmly appreciated.

Step 3: Travel to Mount Athos

Good to Know

Ferry Boat Routes & Sea Transport

Access to Mount Athos from Ouranoupolis is only possible by sea (ferry boat, speedboat, or sea taxi).

• Ferry Departures: 06:30 a.m. and 09:45 a.m. Monday–Friday; 07:00 a.m. and 09:45 a.m. on Saturday; and 09:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

• Speedboat Departures: The Agioreitikes Grammes shipping company operates departures at 08:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The Microathos shipping company operates departures at 08:00 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. every day.

• Duration: The ferry journey to Dafni takes approximately 2 hours, while the speedboat journey takes approximately 45–50 minutes. From Dafni, the bus journey to Karyes takes approximately 30 minutes.

Very Important: Ferry and speedboat schedules are indicative and may change due to weather conditions, operational requirements, or seasonal adjustments. Always confirm the current departure time directly with the selected shipping company before travelling.

• Seat Reservations: It is highly advisable to book your ferry boat tickets in advance. Advance reservation is required for speedboats.

Step 4: Pick Up Your Diamonitirion

The original Diamonitirion (entry permit) must be collected on the day of your departure from the Pilgrims’ Office in Ouranoupoli.

Requirements: You must appear in person and present your passport or national ID card.

Arrival Time: You should arrive at least 1 hour before your ferry departs (no later than 09:00).

Instructions for Pilgrims from the Holy Administration of Mount Athos (Holy Epistasia)

📌 Good to Know

- Your clothing and overall appearance should be modest and respectful, as befits a sacred place.
- Please keep your mobile phones switched off in the church, the refectory and the courtyards of the Holy Monasteries and other monastic establishments.
- Do not enter any buildings or areas beyond those designated for guests without permission.
- Take part quietly in the services in church and in the meals at the refectory, and respect the schedule and any specific instructions of each monastic establishment.
- The use of televisions, radios and devices for playing music is prohibited.
- As a general rule, smoking is not permitted indoors or in the courtyards of the Holy Monasteries and other monastic establishments.
- Camping outdoors is strictly prohibited.
- Hunting is prohibited, as is bringing weapons or dogs onto Mount Athos.
- Video recording without permission is strictly prohibited. Any recording equipment and footage will be confiscated by the competent authorities.
- Photographing monks or interior spaces without prior permission is prohibited.
- If you hold a Special Diamonitirion – in other words, if you have been invited by a particular monastic establishment – do not seek accommodation at another establishment, as this violates the hospitality rules of Mount Athos.

What to Bring When Visiting Mount Athos

Preparing for your visit to Mount Athos is simple, but packing wisely will make your journey far more comfortable. As you will spend several days walking between monasteries, travelling by ferry and staying in traditional monastic guesthouses, it is best to travel light and bring only the essentials.

Essential Documents

Before leaving for Ouranoupoli, make sure you have your passport or national ID card, your Diamonitirion reservation confirmation, monastery reservation details and your ferry tickets. Keeping these documents together in a small travel wallet or waterproof folder is highly recommended.

Clothing

Modest and comfortable clothing is expected throughout Mount Athos. Pack long trousers, lightweight shirts or polo shirts, comfortable underwear and socks, together with a light jacket or fleece for cooler mornings and evenings. A waterproof jacket is also useful, especially during spring, autumn and winter.

Footwear

Comfortable walking shoes are one of the most important items to bring. Many visitors walk several kilometres each day, often on uneven paths or stone roads between monasteries. Avoid wearing brand-new shoes for your trip. A pair of lightweight sandals or slippers can also be useful inside the monasteries.

Personal Essentials

Bring your personal medication, toiletries, a reusable water bottle, a mobile phone with charger or power bank, and enough cash in euros for ferry tickets, small purchases or voluntary donations, as card payments are not always available.

Optional Items

Many visitors also choose to bring a prayer rope (Komboskini), a small Bible or prayer book, a notebook for personal reflections and a flashlight for early morning departures or evening walks around the monasteries.

Travel Light

Remember that everything you pack will travel with you throughout your visit to Mount Athos. A small backpack containing only the essentials is usually the best choice. Packing light will make walking easier and allow you to focus on the spiritual purpose of your journey rather than carrying unnecessary luggage.

It is based on departures with the 08:00 a.m. high-speed boat or the 09:45 a.m. ferry, giving you enough time to collect your Diamonitirion and prepare for your journey. If you plan to travel on the first ferry at 06:30 a.m., you should be at the Pilgrims’ Office promptly at 06:00 a.m. and proceed directly to the port after collecting your permit.

06:00 a.m. – The Pilgrims’ Office opens. Walk just 1 minute (40 metres) from your room to collect your Diamonitirion.
06:30 a.m. – Return comfortably to your room for a final coffee or a quick double-check of your backpack.
07:15 a.m. – Leave your remaining luggage at our free storage facility.
07:30 a.m. – Walk just 3 minutes to the port and board the ferryboat, completely relaxed and ready for your pilgrimage.

Please note: This timeline is an indicative suggestion. Actual times may shift depending on the daily pilgrim traffic at the Office, but our ultra-central location ensures you will always have the maximum time available.
